- Oscar Barillas Hi Coach I'm running The ING NYC, my 1st Marathon and Im getting one of your training plans, checking the other day.. it says you can include races - that I already have scheduled like The Bronx 10M and The SI Half among others- but when you are filling "the form" only lets you put 1, once you get the plan, you can include more? Oscar
- Arthur Kirby Hi, coaches. Is it common to experience IT Band trouble only on one side?...what does this say about my gait? I trained for last year's marathon and ran Charlotte's instead...took the holidays off and ever since, I am now hurting after mile 8. What gives?
- ING New York City Marathon Tracy, I would have answered your e-mail by now if I wasn't stuck in this chat! If your classes are typical spin classes, you can use them as your speedwork, but three times a week is a little too much anaerobic work for a marathon program. We recommend backing off on two of the three and finding time to do a tempo run for your other hard day.
- ING New York City Marathon Yes, Coach Stuart recommends Matt Fitzgerald's "The New Rules of Marathon and Half-Marathon Nutrition." Even after 57 marathons, he still got useful tips before his age-group win this year in London.
- Karen Renta Foley Hi coaches, I suffered a stress fracture in my foot the end of March. I'm getting back to running but during my recovery, I was swimming, biking and using the elliptical. I would like to keep cross-training in my marathon training since my injury was definitely an overuse injury. Do the trainings include or allow for cross training days? How many days are recommended?
- Steve Beyer How is the ING Marathon training program differ from lets say Runners world smart coach plus program. I am running ING this year and I am trying to decide on the two of them? Thanks in Advance.
- ING New York City Marathon Steve, we highly recommend using our programs, which are built specifically for the ING New York City Marathon. You can sign up for our program to see the first week by using this code: free1 and see for yourself. If each of the 47,000+ runners in our race used our program, they would get 47,000+ different plans. Many other programs only offer a few levels to choose from.
- Ricky Djoko Basoeki coach, i run 3 days a week and do long run 14 miles on week end.. is that enough for prepare the marathon ? do i need more days for train than 3 days ? thank you coach
- Manuel-Manny E. Bernal im running my first marathon in november and still looking at best training plans. i ve been running about 25 miles a week to start and included swimming as i have shin splints. is there any specific pace or how many miles i should do during my long runs?
- Lisa Moorman I am a "power-walker". Are there many people who power-walk the marathon? What is the time limit?
- ING New York City Marathon Lisa, the ING New York City Marathon has been racewalked in 3:15! And yes, many people do walk all or part of the race every year. You sound like a serious power walker, so you should have no trouble beating the time cutoff. The race time limit is about 8.5 hours. Official closing time is 7:25 p.m.
- Sylvia Mayorga Hello coaches!! I was wondering, I have joined a cross fit gym, and am running the marathon this year for charity. Can I combine both the training and cross fit?? And also, how long before the marathon would you suggest me tapering off of cross fit?? Thank you so much!!!
- ING New York City Marathon Sylvia, you can combine crossfit with your marathon training, but the more crossfit/less running you do, the more likely you are to compromise your marathon potential. If your goal is to finish, then you should be OK. If your running goals are higher, we recommend you focus on your running for the 3 months before the race. As for the taper, it should start three weeks before race day.
- Liliana Pickens I'm training for 16 weeks, how many hill repeats should I be doing? I live in Fl, so hills are scarce!
- ING New York City Marathon Liliana, are you training for a hilly race? The ING New York City Marathon has moderate hills throughout, but nothing mountainous. If you can't find hills, there is always the treadmill and/or stairs. Try to do a designated hill workout every two weeks and try to incorporate some hills into your long runs.
- Jo DeCicco I like a 10 day training plan. It's easier on my middle aged joints and I run better than when I run long every week. Is this available on the 20 week plan?
- ING New York City Marathon Thank you for joining today's live chat. Please join us Wednesday at noon right here for our next live chat. We will be answering all of your marathon training questions. Until then, happy trails. --Coach Stuart and Coach John
- ING New York City Marathon Our programs also predicts your finishing time goal range. The runners who used our program in 2011 ran a much smarter race than the rest of the field. Runners who didn't use the program averaged a 52-minute positive split (second half of race slower than first,) whereas runners who used our program averaged 18 minutes.
- ING New York City Marathon Brittney, most marathon programs advise about four 20-milers--but that's because they're generic plans. Ours starts each runner off at the point that he or she has reached at that time, and also depends on the runner's goals. If someone just wants to...See More
- ING New York City Marathon We're excited to discuss our online programs with you today. Our programs are unique to each user, built from the runner's personal info, such as age, gender, height, weight, running experience, recent races, goals, and schedule.

- Anna O'Donnell Hi-this is my first marathon! Excited to just finish ha! I usually do halfs and small races as well as triathlons. I am training the full 20 weeks . yes how many times to run 20 miles in prep- i think i just see it once in the plan i am doing. good luck everyone!
- Myralis ColĆ³n I have ran two half marathons and working on my third one but I would like to run a full marathon can you please tell me how do I go about signing up for one thank you
- Jeanine Dowd Hello. Can you tell me how to train for hillls when living in a flat area? Do you have a recommendation for using the treadmill when training for hilly marathon/?
- Julie Damone Fazio Hi Tracey, I'm NO coach, that's for sure, but I did it. A 3:58 marathon after a 1:58 1/2 with 3 months training. I was 41. Good luck!
- Tracy Tenpenny Hi coaches, thank you for all of your insight. What impression do you have on the under 4hrs. In 4 months program? NYC will be my first marathon and I just finished a half marathon in 1:56. I'm 44, so age is a consideration. Thanks, Tracy from Wisconsin
- Arthur Kirby Do you guys think that I actually injured myself doing the marathon?...I had done two 20+ training runs with the JackRabbits and had no issues prior to the marathon.
- Liliana Pickens How about the waves? I put my eft at 4:45, but training for 4:20/4:30. What time will i start running?
- Brittney Castine Hi coach Stuart and coach John- I'm running the marathon this year, and know that we're officially 20 weeks away from the day of the race. I ran last year, (in Harrisburgh since the NYC marathon was cancelled,) but only trained for 2 months- finishing at 4:59. This year, I'm training the full 20 weeks, since I really want to finish under 4:30. How many times, do you think, I should run 20 miles to prep? Thank you!

NYC Marathon training program chat
Today the NYC Marathon had its coaches Stuart and John in for a Facebook lunch chat to answer any questions about their online training program. It would be applicable to all marathon runners, not just those joining me this November for the NYC event. Thought I would repost the whole comments area from that post here, in case any of it is useful to my fellow runners. Hard to follow but perhaps useful.
